This test method applies only to hammers with an impact energy not to exceed 0. Earlier recommendations for rock mechanics applications were only for hammers asstm an impact energy of 0.
Hammers with energies above 0. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
ASTM D – 14 Standard Test Method for Determination of Rock Hardness by Rebound Hammer Method
It is beyond the scope of c5873 standard to consider significant digits used in analytical methods for engineering design. Reliable results depend on many factors; Practice D provides a means of evaluating some of those factors. Test Method D provides more information on compressive strength of rock.
Care should be taken when testing such rocks and conglomerates as the rebound values axtm vary between testing a large piece of aggregate versus softer matrix of the conglomerate.
Accordingly, this limitation should be kept in mind when selecting a hammer type.
Active Risk Management
For a given plunger d573 diameter and radius of curvature, the impact energy of the rebound hammer determines its range of applicability. Note 2 — The quality of the result produced by this test method is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used.
Work Item s – proposed revisions of this standard. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. These applications include, for examples, the prediction of penetration rates for tunnel boring machines, determination of rock quality for construction purposes, grouping of test specimens, and prediction of hydraulic erodibility of rock. Users of this test method are cautioned that compliance with Practice D does not in itself assure reliable results.
Link to Active This link will always route to the current Active version of the standard. Historical Version s – view previous versions of standard. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing and sampling.
Note 1 — Several types of rebound hammers are commercially available to accommodate testing of various sizes and types of rock. For the same rock or material, rebound numbers obtained from different hammers are not comparable.
In addition, they are representative of the significant digits that generally should be retained. Referenced Documents purchase separately The documents listed below are referenced within the subject standard but are not provided as part of the standard.
