Calvino’s stories are fluid and semi-magical. His men, anyway, are well-developed and very human. I liked the romance, the playful subversion, all that, I don’t know, perhaps it was me that lacked Italo, perhaps ’twas me. I’m not sure it has to do with amoress different translators – as it’s a mixed bag with my list above – some by longtime translator William Weaver, and others by Archibald Colquhoun or Peggy Wright.
