In this thesis, humans are originally female dorsi but not seafaring creatures who call themselves Clefts. Lessing has a hard time clefy her mother and father as people other than her parents, or, for that matter, imagining a reality in which she herself did not exist. A quick read that seems to drive home the differences between the sexes, sometimes annoyingly so.
Eventually, Cleft meets Squirt, and the rest is prehistory. The Cleft is a braided narrative, in which a Roman historian of Nero’s time tells the story of an earlier, mythic period. But the execution was incredibly boring and the notions about gender rather reductive someone said the book was like “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” combined with “Lord of the Flies” – an apt description, but without any of the bits that actually made Lord of the Flies compelling.

It took a while before I found out, that it was a Roman historian that tells the story, I could have used that from the beginning.
